Job Title:  Senior Grain Merchandiser

POSITION OVERVIEW

 

The grain procurement position involves the development and management of supplier relationships, both at the producer and commercial level, in a manner that will optimize the facility’s grain procurement/origination strategy while maintaining competitive advantages and facilitating commodity logistics.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES

 

  • Development of existing and prospective supplier accounts that will provide for a positive relationship for both the producer and the company. Maintain strong customer relationships, demonstrating experience in building and retaining customer trust and loyalty.

  • The Grain Merchandiser will have frequent internal contacts with the Ethanol Marketer, Plant Manager, Maintenance, and support staff to maximize company revenue and plant profitability. 

  • Skillful negotiation of grain origination for completion of contractual agreements with producers and commercial supply; executing grain contracts, resolving customer complaints and contractual issues. Ensure that grain accounting functions are completed as necessary and required.

  • Facilitate timely product delivery to ensure uninterrupted supply of grain for production of ethanol and distillers grains. A background in logistics coordination and negotiating freight issues is highly desired. Manage grain inventories and storage capacity to optimize market opportunities.

  • Implement effective Risk Management strategies.  Develop and support hedging and futures strategies and other risk management methods to align grain procurement with the overall business strategy of the company. Manage risk strategies that includes natural gas and corn oil, to maximize ethanol crush margin opportunities. Must be able to work closely with and successfully interact with risk management committee and partnering brokerage firms.

  • Maintain accurate records in regard to contracts, government reporting, and other product inventories.

  • Assist and participate in company/community activities as necessary.

  • Work with members of management to efficiently and effectively build a team atmosphere that produces high quality employees with low turnover.

 

 EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in agricultural related field preferred.

  • 3 – 5 years of experience in grain procurement or related field and previous management experience required.

  • Prior P & L responsibility with grain merchandising and managing a hedge grain position required.

  • Applicant must be willing to relocate to an acceptable area of EKAE.

 

SKILLS

  • Proven track record of leadership skills with attention to detail, follow-up and a can-do, hands-on style.

  • Well-developed analytical skills are required to resolve complex problems and to plan for and lead the grain origination process. 

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills for dealing with staff, government, contractors and the Management Team.

  • Proficient knowledge of personal computers, Microsoft Office software, a computerized grain accounting system is required.

  • The position requires minimal physical exertion during the performance of the majority of the duties.  Most work is performed while standing, sitting or walking.

  • Infrequent requirements to lift up to 50 pounds, when moving parts, equipment or supplies.
